Situation: I am a manager at a Fortune 100 company, waiting for a job candidate to arrive to interview with me. This candidate is a graduate of an esteemed university, with impressive experiences and an average grade point average on his record. I am interviewing him for a front-line, customer contact position where he will represent my company to clients and potential clients.

Set-up: Ten minutes before our scheduled appointment, I receive a telephone call. It is the job candidate on the phone.

telephone call - lost job opportunity

Job Candidate: “Hello. I’m at the doctor’s. They diluted my eyes and I’m waiting for them to give me my subscription. I wanted you to know that I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

I told him not to bother. (I already made my decision about him after that phone call.)

Do you know why he never got the chance to interview for the job?

If your answer is “yes”, then what are the reasons? Hints:

  • Timing of the call.
  • Language use.
  • Word selection.

What image will this person project for my business?

If your answer is “no”, then you need to schedule a Success Language program to acquire the Success Language tools as soon as you can physically press the active links to the left of this page — or send an e-mail to Sylvia@SpringboardTraining.com to do so!
